User interviews are an essential exercise in qualitative research before defining your product and brand. As a business owner, they provide invaluable insights into your target audience's needs, frustrations, and behaviors. This primary research helps ensure you create an offering that genuinely solves problems and resonates with customers.

For creatives like me who design the product experience, user interviews illuminate how people think and what motivates them. This allows us to craft user-centric solutions aligned with real needs rather than making assumptions. Interviews get us out of the building and expose us to diverse perspectives we may never consider otherwise.

The Interview Process I Follow

  1. Establish Clear Goals

Before conducting any interviews, I establish clear goals by asking:

  • What do I want to know?

  • How will I know when I've learned it?

  • What company goals will this work support?

  • What decisions will these insights enable?

Clearly defining the key research question, like "What are the primary pain points for freelancers managing their finances?" allows me to plan an interview guide to gather meaningful insights.

  1. Craft The Right Questions

With goals set, I develop open-ended questions that invite descriptive responses over yes/no answers. Questions should sound natural and conversational, not clinical. Avoid leading questions that imply an expected response.

  1. Conduct Interviews

Kicking off interviews, I provide context, explain recording for research purposes, and encourage honest feedback. My script flows from broad opening questions to gradually more focused topics of interest.

Key tips:
  • Use a friendly, casual tone to put people at ease

  • Don't ask loaded questions ("What did you like about X?")

  • Stay patient through silence as people formulate thoughts

  • Rephrase responses to confirm your understanding

  1. Analyze Findings

Reviewing recordings and notes, I extract compelling quotes, identify patterns in responses, and surface key insights. My analysis summary includes:

  • Participant demographics

  • What we got right/wrong about assumptions

  • Surprising learnings

  • 3-5 major insights with context and recommendations

  • Potential user archetypes and desired product features

The process synthesizes all voices into a cohesive research story to inform product strategy.

For the Motivated Entrepreneur... The path of an entrepreneur is challenging, with no shortage of hustle required. User interviews are an invaluable investment that gets you out of guessing mode. By deeply understanding your customers through their own words, you build a rock-solid foundation to create products and messaging that truly connect. The learnings may validate your vision, spark pivots, or reveal untapped opportunities. Embrace this chance to listen, because that's where industry-defining innovations are born.

For The Passionate Creative... As a creatives, our instincts and personal preferences can't be our sole guides when designing for the masses. User interviews humble us by exposing how real people think and act in ways we'd never expect. These raw insights infuse our work with authenticity as we translate real needs into elegant solutions. User interviews activate our empathy and allow us to walk in our audience's shoes. That's where the most impactful design happens - at the intersection of desirability and viability.
